ACT: This theory is an approach that strengthens psychological flexibility. It is an empirically-based intervention that uses acceptance and mindfulness strategies in different ways with commitment. Behavior-change strategies are included.

Vipassana teacher Michele McDonald defines the qualities of a moment of mindfulness using the acronym RAIN:

Recognition — What is really happening? (ACT: being present)

Acceptance — Can we accept that it’s happening? (ACT: acceptance)

Interest — Can we bring genuine interest to what is happening? (ACT: self as context)

Non-identification — Is this happening “to me”, or is it simply happening? (ACT: defusion)

A lack of mindfulness moment can be described as DROP:

Distraction,

Resistance,

Obliviousness,

Personification.
